Watercolour

Several years ago,  I bought good quality watercolour paint in tubes and Arches paper as I wanted to paint more in this medium.  In many ways,  watercolour is harder to paint than say oil or acrylic because you have to sort of think backwards. You can't put any lighter colours or tones over darker ones.   Also, simplicity is often more effective, with the subtle  play of light between colours, washes and the white of the paper.  I still find it difficult to let go from putting in too much detail at times.

What I like most about watercolour is how easy it is to use.  Cleaning brushes is so simple  (and less toxic) than say with oil paint.  It's also convenient to bring with you anywhere you go.  I have been bringing my watercolours with me whenever I travel and try to paint landscapes 'en plein air' and portraits of people I meet.  Here are some examples from the last decade of paintings on paper,  from travel journals and postcards.
